Multicolor Agapornis Fischeri

Dirk Van den Abeele is an ornithologist who has extensively studied and reported on Agapornis fischeri, also known as Fischer’s Lovebird. In 2002, he first reported about a ‘multicolor’ phenotype in these birds, which exhibit a local reduction of both eumelanin and psittacine, resulting in green birds with random yellow and blue spots1. This multicolor variation was quite rare, with only three registered cases until 2022, and none had bred offspring. However, in early 2023, a fertile multicolor Agapornis fischeri was reported, which has successfully produced offspring. This development is currently under further research1.

Van den Abeele’s work through Ornitho-Genetics VZW continues to contribute to the understanding of color mutations in the genus Agapornis and other parrots2. His dedication to avian genetics has made him a respected figure in the field of ornithology, particularly in the study of lovebirds and their color variations. If you’re interested in learning more about his work, you might find his publications and the Ornitho-Genetics VZW website to be valuable resources12.
